Industry Overview

The Electrical & Electronics (E&E) industry is one of the leading industries, contributing 24.5 per cent to the manufacturing sector in the Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). E&E products have been the largest traded items for Malaysia for several decades since the industry inception in the 1960s. The industry evolution until today has turned Malaysia as one of the leading points in the global E&E value chain.

In 2014, Malaysia’s exports of E&E products was valued at RM231.23 billion, with 49.2 per cent share of manufactured goods exports and 32.9 per cent share of Malaysia’s total exports. Major export destinations are China, USA, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan.

The industry can be classified into two sectors namely the electrical and electronics sector.

Electronic Sector

The electronics sector leads the E&E industry whereby over 38 per cent of electronics exports is contributed by semiconductor devices, integrated circuits (ICs), transistors and valves. MNCs continue to be the main catalyst in the development of this sector.

Malaysian companies involved in the sector have been able to develop significant capabilities and skills in manufacturing a wide range of electronic products across all significant sub-sectors such as electronic components and parts; industrial electronics as well as consumer electronics.

These firms have also continued to move-up the value chain to produce higher technology and value-added products, through continuous intensification of research and development (R&D) activities including in IC design.

Electrical Sector

The electrical sector had its beginning in the 1960s with the establishment of manufacturing plants for the import substitution of household appliances, electrical fittings, wires & cables and automotive batteries. The industry has then grown over the years, with capability to supply high-end electrical products including electrical components to both domestic and international markets.

Malaysian capabilities

Malaysian companies have accumulated vast experience in supporting the global E&E multinationals. Today, they are capable exporters that have been supplying various E&E products worldwide. It is notable to highlight the following areas of specialisation that Malaysian companies are capable of:
